Watch the worlds first commercial cell phone call being made in 1983

Fancy taking a step back in time? Well National Geographic have posted a video of the world’s first commercial cell phone call being made from a car in Chicago.

The call was made on October 13th 1983 by Bob Barnett, who was president of regional telecom, Ameritech. The call was made from a parking lot of Soldier Field in Chicago. Interestingly, the call was to Alexander Graham Bell’s great-grandson who was in Germany.

The surrounding press watched in amazement as the call was routed via the new wireless network to Germany and all from the comfort of a car. They were also given the chance to try the new technology for themselves.

It’s hard to imagine, that in the space of a few decades, the technology that AT&T said would never reach more than a million customers, dominates our daily lives and now has more than 6 billion subscriptions worldwide.

Could you imagine a world without your beloved smartphone and instant access to your daily feeds and social networks? No it doesn’t bear thinking about! :)

Facebook Home announced. New home on Android

Facebook has today taken wraps of it’s new service ‘Facebook Home’. It’s not an app but more a suite of apps and home screen replacement, a little like what you would expect from a third party launcher.

Interestingly, Facebook Home will only be available on Android Smartphones initially. When asked if it would be available on iOS devices, Mark Zuckerberg  didn’t count it out, but noted that such a feature would require cooperation.

Facebook Home will be available from April 12th to download on Google Play and will initially support the following phones: Galaxy S III, S 4, the HTC One, One X+ and the Note II. More devices will follow including support for Android Tablets.

The app/suite looks amazing and by the looks of it will make the Facebook on Android experience one of the best. The Facebook for Android app has always had bad press for being cumbersome and not very useful but this looks to change.

Have a look at the videos below for an exciting look at how Facebook Home will integrate with your existing Android Smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy S4 official

samsung-galaxy-s4-officially-announced-0

After months of rumours, Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy S4, its next-generation flagship smartphone, at a global launch in New York City. JK Shin says the Galaxy S4 will make our lives “richer, simpler and fuller” when presenting on-stage.

The hardware specs for the Samsung Galaxy S4 are impressive. The new flagship smartphone features a 5-inch (1920 x 1080) full HD Super AMOLED display, 1.6GHz octo-core Exynos 5 processor and 2GB of RAM, so should offer plenty of power.

There’s a 13-megapixel rear camera, 2-megapixel front camera, Wi-Fi, LTE, IR Blaster, NFC, and improved 2,600mAh battery, meaning it should make it through the day too.

The operating system inside is Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), however it’s heavily skinning under Samsung’s custom TouchWiz UX on-top, adding plenty of additional features.

samsung-galaxy-s4-officially-announced-1

The Galaxy S4 features a plastic build similar to the Galaxy S III, though it is thinner at 7.9mm. That plastic cover means it’s removable, to access the battery, or to expand storage via microSD.

With the Galaxy S4, Samsung has added several enhancements to TouchWiz. A new S Translator feature is present. It will be embedded into apps like email, but also launches as a separate app to translate varying languages, much like Google Translate.

The camera software has been updated to feature a picture-in-picture modes for stills and video, dubbed Dual Shot and Dual Recording, that are sure to compliment the 13-megapixel beast quite nicely. When taking a photo, it will snap both the front and rear facing cameras to get a users’ reaction that can be embedded into one shot. A new Eraser Shot feature will remove distracting objects from the background of images.

Highly rumoured, eye recognition software will be included with the Galaxy S4. The Smart Scroll feature enables a user to scroll through a homepage if you tilt your hand, and will only do so if the user is looking at the handset.

Smart Pause does similar, pausing a video playing on the device when it detects a user is looking away from the screen. Lastly in this futuristic arena, a user can hover a finger over the screen to perform specific functions like increasing the size of an image thumbnail.

A new feature called Group Play adds to the social-good, as eight Galaxy S4s in a room can connect with each other to play the same music or games. Like HTC’s One smartphone, an IR blaster is also included on the handset to control any television, which will be awesome given Samsung’s recent assault on the media front.

The Galaxy S4 features a pedometer for fitness tracking that is paired with an S Health app. It counts steps, calories, and other fitness information, with the help of Samsung’s S Band fitness tracker.

An S4 drive feature has been added that gives users hands-free access to calls, messages, music, maps and weather while drive. A voice reads out the relevant information.

The Samsung hub stores videos, books, games, and other media in a magazine-like interface to search and purchase content.

In a never before-seen feature, Samsung is including the ability to control the S4′s display while wearing gloves.

There’s no word on specific carriers or pricing, though Samsung is shipping the device in both black (Black Mist) and white (White Frost). It will be available on 26 April.

Moonwalking Pony Goes Viral for Three UK

A video of a plucky Shetland Pony doing the moonwalk to Fleetwood Mac’s “Everywhere” has become an unlikely YouTube hit, propelling the sponsor, UK telecom Three, to international fame.

The video, which has gotten 1.2 million views since it hit YouTube on Feb. 28, shows the cute pony strutting his stuff in the Shetland’s breathtaking landscape and then taking a break when a farmer in a tractor pulls up. A caption at the end states “Silly Stuff. It matters.” To prolong the viral success, the company is floating the hashtag #DancePonyDance and inviting fans to produce their own mashups at ponymixer.com.

That site lets you choose from several musical genres, including “boy band” and punk. But, sorry, there’s no “Harlem Shake” option at the moment.

HTC One – Coming Soon

HTC have kept us all on tenterhooks with the release of their new flagship smartphone the HTC One. So we’re thrilled to announce we will be ranging this exciting new phone.

I think you’ll agree it’s been worth the wait when you see that this smartphone comes packed full of features that will make your mobile internet experience faster and simpler.

First and foremost is a brand new feature called BlinkFeed™, which sends all your social media, email and news updates direct to your homescreen as a live feed. It’s great to have everything coming in to the one place, instead of having to open different applications to get all the news you want. You’ll never miss an important cat photo again;-)

If you love your music, BoomSound™ features dual stereo speakers on the front of the phone which mean you’re listening to the music as it was truly meant to sound. Couple this with Beats Audio and you’ve got great sound quality, which translates to films, tv shows and games.

The HTC camera has had a make over too; the technology is now called Zoe™, it lets in 300% more light than your average smartphone camera and features triple sensors. This means that the camera takes 3 different levels of photos and blends them together into one, clear, sharp image. The result is amazing quality shots and accurate colour. Not only that, but the camera starts taking pictures before you’ve even pressed the button, clever, mind reading camera!

With its sleek aluminium design, which feels amazing, and a powerful 1.7Ghz quad core processor to boot, the HTC One has rather a lot going for it. It’s also our latest Ultrafast enabled device, meaning it will already make the most of our DC-HSDPA network and then LTE when we launch later this year.

Take a look at our sneak peek video, filmed live from HTC’s launch event and let us know what you think.
